As many of you will know I host and run this site for YC.  This is free and I cover the costs (apart from domain registration which we rely on donations to cover).

Unfortunately the Database that keeps the forum running is consuming far too much space on the web-server and I have recently received emails from the hosting company asking me to reduce the space used or start paying a vastly increased sum.  As such I'm looking at ways to reduce the disk space the forum uses.  Now one of the things we've never done is clear out old topics !.... EVER !

So, I would like to ask you, the users of the forum what you'd like to do about it Smiley  For instance, I could clear out all topics that haven't been active for any given period of time (not including sticky topics) etc.....  I believe this to be the best route.  A full backup of the database will be taken before any "cleaning" obviously but this is something that we need to do pretty soon, before I get a big bill Sad

Please feel free to post below any suggestions for dates for which un-used forum topics can be cleared out etc etc....

Thanks
Si

I reckon delete all posts/topics older than 2009.  quite alot of topics havent been posted in in ages.

Take away the ability to add photos to topics (other than from an image hosting w/site).

Can we keep the nights away, but get rid of other stuff.

I think we have had a clearout once (maybe about 2/3 years ago now) so about due!

Thats fine, I'll make the "nights away" sticky and they won't get trimmed.

Any other comments on this thread before I do this later this week ?

Panic over....

I found the culprit was an overzealous logging system on the forum.... once cleared out, the forum database has gone from 3.5GIG to 60MEG ! :-)  Thats more like it.

No need to remove anything, all is good.... nothing to see here, move along ;-)

That is 1 massive log!
Glad you found an easy fix Smiley

Has the anomaly where me being left logged in hogs band width been fixed?
Or is it best for me to continue closing all yc tabs as soon as I finish reading them

When I first found yc I looked at a good chunk of the previous threads.  Often the same or similar topics are talked about.  E.g. how do you choose a van, how do you fix a...

If there is no space problem I would leave it with useful history (the old chatter could go if someone fancied sifting it)

I agree with Ad, if there isn't an issue with space i'd leave it... I also found yc the same way
